Pineal gland: physiological role in the body, a functional deficiency in the elderly, possible ways of correction
The article deals with the functioning of pineal gland. Decrease of its functional activity with age can promote disease and accelerate aging. In this regard, one way to slow down age-related changes in the body is the correction of functional failure of pineal gland in elderly people. According to the results of our study, administration of exogenous melatonin increases melatonin night peak plasma concentration and restores the daily rhythm of hormone to a level typical for young people. Epiphyseal extract epytalaminum in the elderly has modulating effect on the melatonin-producing function of pineal gland: in patients with functional deficiency of the gland epytalaminum increases melatonin night peak plasma concentrations and in people with preserved melatonin-producing ability of pineal gland the drug reduces plasma concentration of hormone at night.
